The Sefer Yetzirah (the ancient Jewish esoteric “Book of Creation”) states in one of its first sections that the Supreme One, the “Divine Decad created the Universe out of nothing into ten infinitudes, (1) the infinite beginning, (2) the infinite end, (3) the infinite good, (4) the infinite evil, (5) the infinite high, (6) the infinite deep, (7) the infinite East, (8) the infinite West, (9) the infinite North, (10) the infinite South, [...]”.
The translations from the original Hebrew text differ from one interpreting-translating author to the other; but the message that needs to be retained here is that the Divine created ALL from and in Itself, including the infinite good and the infinite evil.
In this, the Sefer Yetzirah resonates with the position of Taoism, which inherently accepts that all creation in the Universe strives towards harmony between opposite-complementary forces, with the main pair being indicated with the terms yang (masculine essence) and yin (feminine essence) as the two primordial forces. This aim for harmony and balance is what drives Creation, and it requires a continued balancing act of these opposites-complements; where too much of one will wreak havoc. Even Creation finds its opposite-complement in Destruction, which in turns leads to Creation again. This concept of polarity is the core of the Taoist principles and philosophy, and should not be viewed as a conflict.
Every aspect has its opposite-complement, as every high vibration has a pendant in the lower spectrum. The two opposites complete each other, and are required to maintain the balance in the Universe. They are the sides of the same Divine Coin. One cannot exist without the other; life and death, good and evil, light and darkness, warm and cold, high and low, love and hate... all are aspects of the same Universal system of Creation-Destruction.
They give each other their meaning; take one away and you destroy the other.
As Lao Tse, the author of one of the main books of Taoism called the Tao te Ching (where “tao” stands for “path” and “te” for “virtue”) stated
“Something and nothing create each other.”
The Universe itself is a continuous game of Creation and Destruction.
In Hinduism this also appears clearly from the supreme divine trinity where Brahmā is the (aspect of the) One from which the Universe was created, Vishnu is the (aspect of the) One who is the maintainer-preserver and maintains what is created and Shiva is the (aspect of the) One that is the destroyer-transformer of that which is created. And these three act inside the One, named Brahman.
Again, the Sefer Yetzirah to state along the same lines “there are Three, each of which stands on its own: one is in the affirmative-constructive, one is in the negative-destructive, and one makes them equal [i.e. brings balance-equilibrium between the 2 others and is associated with the primordial element indicated as “air”, the other two such elements being “fire and water, water and fire”]”.
Everything and all stems from the unfathomable Creative-Destructive Force; that which always was, is and will be; that which transcends four-dimensional space-time as this presents itself to our five physical senses (i.e. sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell).
Duality is correct for sure, it is the way of Creation in this Universe.
That is however only the surface, the wall in Plato’s allegorical grotto referenced in the chapters Symbolism and Sacred Geometry and The Journey of Life, Part II; while underneath lies only Oneness, connecting all and everything.
In the world of Matter, at the start of the Universe as we now know it, all energetic particles that were to form and form our Universe were compacted into an infinitesimally small space, next to nothing, no-thing.
The basic energetic fabric of all and everything in our Universe, with its astronomical distances, were once much closer to each other than certain parts of your body are to your heart. In other words, all was once connected in a very physical way, in terms of actual proximity.
And we remained and remain connected; for if a particle was once connected to another (“entangled” in scientific parlance), it remains so even if it now resides on the other side of our galaxy or even on the other side of our expanding Universe for that matter.
As everything is connected to everything else, the Light is only thus because of the Darkness. It is from Darkness that Light was and is born. In fact, in the world of Matter this is very literal, the stars which radiate their light in our Universe are born from clouds of gas which are invisible to human eyes as these clouds can only be detected with apparatuses scanning for electromagnetic waves (of which light is an expression) in the long wavelength range, i.e. infrared to microwave length ranges. Furthermore, in modern day cosmology the vast majority of the Universe is thought of as made up of dark matter and dark energy invisible even to the most advanced telescopes and detection mechanisms of our times.
Light and Darkness are inherently connected as they form the sides of one and the same medallion, as the symbol of the Tao so clearly depicts.
This chapter further highlights a.o. the symbolism and messages contained in the depiction of the crucified Christ, the messages conveyed through the symbolic of the Mayan peoples, and many more... all with the intention of demonstrating the great knowledge our ancestors acquired and which is of great pratical use in constructing and facilitating our lives, still very much so in these modern times of ours.
